Your Environment Should Support the Habits You Want

So often we say we want to be healthier, calmer, more present. But our environment tells a different story.

We keep snacks in the cupboard and wonder why we keep snacking. We expect to feel focused while working in a messy or cluttered environment filled with things we don’t need — things that don’t bring us joy and only add to the sense of chaos. We want to connect with our kids, but we don’t plan our time or protect our focus — so when we are with them, our minds are elsewhere, and we end up feeling guilty.

If you want to stop doing the things that make you feel bad — like overeating, snapping, or zoning out — stop making those things the easiest option.

Do an “Ease Audit.” Take 10 minutes and ask yourself:

  • What habits do I want to build?
  • How can I make those easier, quicker, and more visible in my day?
  • What habits do I want to stop?
  • How can I make those harder, less convenient, or easier to avoid?

This isn’t about forcing yourself to change. It’s about removing friction and setting up your space to support the life you say you want.

Examples:

  • Don’t buy the snacks if you don’t want to snack.
  • Declutter spaces where you want to feel calm.
  • Plan ahead so your attention is where it matters most.

It’s about the choices you want to make easier to choose.

When your environment aligns with your intentions, it’s easier to make small steps towards what you really want.
