We Were Told to Set SMART Goals

We Were Told to Set SMART Goals

But the ‘A’ for Achievable might be exactly what’s holding us back. We’ve all been told to “set SMART goals.” Realistic, measurable, achievable. Sounds sensible, right?

But here’s the truth: Real growth doesn’t come from setting achievable goals. It comes from setting goals that force you to become someone new.

Most goals we set are based on what we already believe we can do.

They’re rooted in our past:

  • What we’ve done before
  • What we think is “reasonable”
  • What feels safe

But if your goal doesn’t scare you — even a little — it’s probably not big enough to grow you.

Want a real challenge?

Set a goal you have no clue how to achieve. Set a goal that:

  • Requires you to upgrade your mindset
  • Forces you to feel uncomfortable emotions (like fear, doubt, vulnerability)
  • Demands you develop new skills, new thoughts, and a new identity

That’s the kind of goal where transformation happens. That’s the kind of goal that separates those who grow from those who stay stuck.

Ask yourself:

  • Am I setting goals based on who I am… or who I want to become?
  • Am I willing to fail in trying to achieve something extraordinary?
  • Do I know what I truly want — not just what I think I can get?

Setting big goals doesn’t mean hustling harder. It means becoming bolder. You don’t need to know how to get there. You just need to decide that you will.

What’s one goal you could set that would require you to grow into the next version of yourself?
